What were we wearing 10 years ago?

Leana Goulden

The year was 2011… isn’t that crazy to believe! Fashion was very much on a level with looking ‘preppy’ and ‘hipster.’ Some of the trends that I have sifted through should be locked away and blocked from existence, never to be seen by our grandchildren… others, well long may they reign.

Bandage Dresses

I mean these have to be the some of the most uncomfortable dresses out there… they’re suffocating and honestly, they don’t actually do tremendous things for anyone. Back in 2011 though, they were in style, all the celebs were wearing them which meant that most of the public followed. Do I think this was one of the great fashion trends, 10 years ago? I’m going to say no, but, this is fashion we’re talking about and everything comes around in circles. Who knows, this may get a big re-boot in years to come but I think I will try and stay out of the loop for that one.

Bright Denim

Why? Why? Why? I really do hope that we all burned these. I, alongside most of the nation, owned a pair of bright denim jeans. Looking back, I genuinely cannot understand why my parents let me be seen in public wearing these monstrosities. I remember owning a bright blue pair, that could’ve probably been detected by the space station as they were so obnoxious. There are some moments in life that you have to just accept your mistakes… this, well this was on of them.

Statement Necklaces

Honestly, I’m not going to really complain about this trend. I can’t say that I tend to wear many necklaces myself but these aren’t bad at all. Plus, let’s be honest, if we all had faces and neck-lines like Jessica Alba (middle photograph) then we would be making the most of it.

Harem pants

Can I please escort you to the bin? I do not understand why on earth we believed that these were fashionable. Comfort is key, understandable, but you shouldn’t be strolling around impersonating MC Hammer. I mean seriously, the guy on the right looks like his arms have been extended and he’s now preparing to do the ‘criss cross’ in Cha-cha slide. No. No. No.

Tribal Prints

I have zero issue with this trend. These ladies look truly gorgeous. Normally, I would say that prints should not be mixed, especially if they are both quite bold. However, if you are BeyoncĂ©, rules don’t apply as you can look simply smouldering in just about everything. Honestly, I think even if she was involved in an ‘anything but clothes’ night wrapped in a bin-bag, she would outshine pretty much any one of us regulars.

Bangles

Now, I am privy to a bracelet, a bangle, a piece of arm jewellery. However, this isn’t a singular item that we are referencing. Back in 2011, we weren’t doing things in half measures, a single bangle was simply unheard of. We used to go full-hog; the more, the better. Our arms would be coated in bangles, wrist-bands, loom bands… not fantastic. My last words on the matter would be that singularly as items (Minus the loom bands) they are lovely but piled high, not so much.

Sleeveless Jackets

I really don’t mind these at all. Chezza’s is a bit dated but the other two could definitely be brought back up to speed and tied in with some modern fashion. I think sleeveless jackets are a timeless classic really, something that will always keep on giving. As fashion adapts and does it’s roll-around, a few staple items will always be securely fastened into that suitcase…this is one of those items.

Shorts with tights

I don’t know if I am finally growing up or maybe I am just particular in my own fashion now but this to me is not a good look. There are three variants of this style on the pictures below and yet none of them look beautiful on my eye. Plus, growing up I used to do this, a lot… it is not comfortable. Tights are a massive pain to start with, sliding around and not staying in place. But then to make matters worse, you throw some tight denim jeans over the top… if anything, it just secures them into that non-favourable positions. Wedgies are not the one and therefore this look is also a no.

Mini skirts

To be honest, I don’t think mini skirts have ever really gone out of fashion and probably never will. They’re a lovely little staple item that can be dressed up or dressed down depending on where you are off to.

Hair Feathers

I personally can say that I have never jumped on to the bandwagon of this trend but I have watched many people do just that. I have a few questions for those people: Why did you do that? Did it not hurt when you were getting them out? What happens if you get it caught? To be fair, I’m quite glad I didn’t hop on to this trend, it definitely isn’t my scene.
