Tulips and Daisies

Niamh Griffiths

This image shows brightly coloured tulips.

I want to be like the girls, who take selfies, who post on socials twice daily.

The girls who can wear whatever they may feel, whose makeup is perfect, whose hair smells of Daisies.

I want to be the one making the rules up, my feelings won’t get hurt, if I smell of Tulips.

Instead, I am an introvert, too shy to smile.

My Instagram is beaches. My newsfeed is dry.

Because I’m not like the girls on my phone screen.

I’m made of Tulips; they’re made of Daisies.

And I think Daisies are beautiful flowers, though they intimidate those, with much louder colours.

Because Daisies can go in any bouquet, while Tulips are an acquired taste.

Like trying to compare a dress with dungarees,

Is like trying to contest, Tulips with Daisies.

The delicate flight of falling snowflake, or the gentle rise of a cresting wave.

The girls who laugh hard, love fast then move out,

Top the girls who fall deep, just to fall back apart.

Because those who toy with hearts, live in a world of maybe’s.

They pick the petals off Tulips, to prop up the Daisies.

And I wish I wasn’t wilting, but my posture is shook.

My leaves are being crushed, between the pages of a book.

And I look at you, confused and hazy.

Settling for a Tulip, when I know you like Daisies.

But you say ‘Honey, you don’t see what I see,

I much prefer Tulips over Daisies.

Tulips are strong, they grow tall, from the ground.

Daisies are fickle, always around, in their chains they link, and sink low for their pleasure.

Tulips are a truer treasure’.

But I cannot allow myself to believe, how the two can’t always compete.

When my experience has revealed, life is much easier, when you’re a girl of Daisies.

Doors get opened, opportunities arise, people will give you a chance, without thinking twice

Beauty becomes the ‘old school tie’, but I can’t tie a knot, the way they can tell a lie.

So, I try not to compare, no matter how much it pains me.

I understand the differences, between those girls and girls like me, and though I may feel lesser, I know that I am worthy

Because I am a Tulip

Who learned to grow,

In amongst the Daisies.
