Top Five Groundhog Day Inspired Films

Hope Horsman

Since it is Groundhog Day I thought let’s look at the best Groundhog Day inspired films that are out there. The theme for these films is the main character experiences the same day over and over again, so every time they wake up it will always be 2nd February, for example. Without further ado, here are some of the best Groundhog Day films you can watch.

1.Groundhog Day

This film had to go as the top one, it is an absolute classic. The film was released in 1993 and directed by Harold Ramis, who also co-wrote the first Ghostbusters film. In this film, Bill Murray plays a rather unpleasant weatherman, Phil, who goes to cover Groundhog Day at Punxsutawney. However, when he wakes up the next day he finds that it is once again Groundhog day and will be every time he goes to sleep. Over the course of the film Phil learns how to be a better man and maybe even falls in love along the way.

2.Happy Death Day

It is unique to see a different take on the Groundhog Day theme by turning it into a horror film. The 2017 film, directed by Christopher Landon, shows Theresa Gelbman (played by Jessica Rothe) relive the day she dies over and over again. However, every day she is unravelling clues as to who her killer is. With some humour mixed with a mystery thriller, it is hard not to enjoy this film that will keep you on the edge of your seat guessing who the killer is.

3.Source Code

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a soldier, Colter Stevens, who has his consciousness sent into another body, that body being a teacher. Whilst having no idea what he is doing on the train or why, he has to find a bomb on the train and stop it before it goes off and the identity of the bomber. However, the only catch is that he has eight minutes to do all of this and has been given a set of regulations, like he cannot change the past. With a new female accomplice, Colter sets out to change what he has been told by his superiors and save the day in his own way. This amazingly gripping action film was directed by Duncan Jones in 2011 and is prefect for those looking for a tense Sci-Fi action in February.

4.50 First Dates

While this film, released in 2004, does not repeat the exact day like the other films on this list, there is one character who thinks it is the same day over and over when it isn’t. Drew Barrymore plays a girl, Lucy, who has short-term memory loss due to a car accident and cannot remember the previous day. Due to not remembering yesterday, Lucy wakes up thinking it is 13th October. When Henry, Adam Sandler, approaches her one day and she does not recognise him, he sets out on a mission to make her fall in love with him every day. Peter Segal has directed the perfect Groundhog Day romance film, which will definitely turn on the water works for viewers.

5.Edge of Tomorrow

Another enthralling action film directed by Doug Liman in 2014, which stars Tom Cruise and Emily blunt. Cruise plays Major William Cage who is sent into battle against an alien race. However, he has never been in combat and dies very quickly on the battlefield. The twist is that he wakes up every day to face the same fight with the aliens. He enrols the help of Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who teaches him how to fight and strategize on the battleground. The more the Major learns, the further he gets on the field and the closer he gets to defeating the aliens. A warfare packed movie which will have hearts racing in anticipation as to which side wins.

So, if you fancy celebrating Groundhog Day, you could give these films a watch.
