Tacos… for Christmas?

Leana Goulden

What is the traditional christmas to me? Family. The only thing that matters to me over the festive period is being able to celebrate with my loved ones!

I like the extension of Christmas. For me… it’s the Christmas shopping with my Mum, the seeing friends on Christmas eve, Boxing day with my extended family.

I’ve never been overly bothered about the ‘traditions’ of Christmas really, it’s a huge stress for whoever has to cook and I don’t think it should be like that. After all, it’s a time for celebration not hovering around the stove wondering if you’ve times your roasties right.

Plus, Christmas dinner is just an obnoxious Sunday roast in my opinion. You’ll either love me or hate me for that!

So, where do I fit into all of this? Well, 2019 was the first unconventional Christmas for me and my family and hopefully there’s many more to come.

Did someone say “Mexican Christmas?”

Oh yeah, we pulled out the big guns. Slow-cooked meats, guacamole and tortilla chips.. If I could put the heart-eyes emoji on here, I would!

Mexican food served across a dinner table, a hand already grabbing the first tortilla.

Let’s just do a little reverse to the morning though so that I can fill you in on our fun-packed day. We had a Chinese takeaway and few drinks the night before so it only seemed appropriate that we stayed in bed for a little bit longer. This is normally an absolute no no on Christmas day!

When we did roll out, it was all systems go, get the fiesta music on, pop up some decorations, get our outfits on and have a browse at what cocktail we were going to have first. Pre 12 drinking is acceptable on this day!! I opted for the Tequila Paloma and let me tell you… she’s a beauty!

What did we get up to throughout the day? We shared presents, had a few too many tequilas and played a lot of games.

It started off sensible.. a bit of general chit chat, a round of head’s up, a game of charades. It was all very civilised at this point until the game of all games came out to play.

Cards Against Humanity.

At one point, I genuinely thought my mum had wee’d herself, my step-dad’s belly had jiggled away and I had gone to the abyss.. all because of laughter. Never have I felt the way I did that night. The game is full of rude and saucy cards.. mixed in with an extreme amount of dark humour.

It’s not a game that I would recommend for your Granny but then again who knows, it’s often the ones who you least expect that surprise you the most!

Overall, I wouldn’t have changed this Christmas in any way. I didn’t need pigs in blankets or the Queen’s speech to get me through the day. All I needed was a good time with the people I love… oh, and the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special of course!

Let’s see what Christmas 2020 brings for me!
