My experience with Dermalogica: Face-mask acne recovery

Leana Goulden

Since the face masks became a thing, my face has been seriously hating on me.

Previously, I clung to The Body Shop for my skincare routine.. this, however, grew away from me and my skin started reacting strangely to it. I still use some of The body shop’s products, such as the face masks and haircare but I thought it was time to try out something new.

I decided to join Dermalogica and get a free face mapping consultation online. They gave me a list of problems that my skin was facing such as redness, oiliness.. even wrinkles (yes, I was offended.) I was also given a list of recommendations for products that would benefit my skin.

Products:

  • Special Cleansing Gel
  • Daily Microfoliant
  • Skin Smoothing Cream
  • AGE Bright Spot Fader
  • AGE Bright Clearing Serum
  • Multivitamin Power Firm
  • Redness Relief Essence
  • Breakout Clearing Booster
  • Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash

This is the list of all of the items that I bought! I’ve always struggled at this time of year with my skin… for some reason, it just really seems to need sunshine (don’t we all.) In the summer, I’m clear as a daisy and in the winter months, I just don’t want to be seen. The products that I bought were recommended to me, based on the face mapping consultancy.

I was super excited to try something new!

Week one:

I’d already done the full sha-bang of the routine for these pictures and as you can see, there’s a lot of redness and deep-rooted spots appearing on the surface. I meant to take an even closer picture but the open pores made me genuinely feel quite ill.

In regards to the ‘full sha-bang,’ let me tell you… it was glorious. I don’t know what the exact ingredients are for their formulas but my senses were tingling! The smell was divine… fresh, fruity almost!

I was worried at first about some of the products as I thought they could be too powerful for my sensitive skin. Having struggled with severe acne as a teenager, the endless ‘solutions’ over the years gave my skin a beating. I have been left with long-term effects such as scarring.

The product that I was most concerned about was the daily Microfoliant as exfoliation can sometimes send my skin into a state of panic. However, I was pleasantly surprised, I felt refreshed and rejuvenated.

After the full routine, my skin felt incredible… would it last though?

Week 2

No taking pictures in dim-lit rooms anymore for me! At this point, I was starting to see the effects on my skin. It was pulling the impurities out, making the spots more visible. However, the general condition of my skin was improving.

I took this set of pictures straight after I had finished my routine hence the redness. My oiliness was easing, my ‘wrinkles’ were getting rolled out by the firming cream and generally I was feeling a lot better in myself!

Week 3

I’m finally seeing the improvements that I have craved for so long! I feel happy in my own skin for the first time in a long time. Of course, I expect there will be the odd breakout here and then but generally my skin feels better. This new skincare routine combined with not wearing make-up has allowed my skin to breathe – something I should have allowed a long time ago.

Full disclosure, this skincare routine will not work for everyone and I am by no means telling you to go out and spend a load of money on new products. This is just my skincare journey that I wanted to share. If I could say one thing to people struggling with the same thing, let your skin breathe. That means no make-up and try to minimise mask time whenever you can. Keep up a daily routine… cleanse, tone and moisturise.

This has been my skin saviour.
