Mother’s Day is next week and after 2020, I think our mothers deserve to be treated amazingly. For anyone who is struggling with gift ideas, here are some suggestions to pamper your mum with.
Candle – Who doesn’t love a candle? Take a look at what type of scents your mum likes and find a pretty candle. See if there are any candles that might need replacing, that will mean much more as it will show her you notice the little things. There are also many niche places online where you can purchase personalised candles. So, instead of them having a brands logo printed all over the front, you can write a sentimental message or have a photo showcased.
Chocolates – A simple one, I know, but do not forget that even the simplest of things can mean the world to someone. Does your mum have a favourite chocolate? You can even buy multiple chocolate gifts for under this price, perhaps a hamper filled with her preferred sweets. Just like the candles, there are businesses that can create unique designs with chocolate, so that may be a cool present idea.
Family photobook – This past year has been a hard one for everyone so a photo album with her favoured family photos would be a meaningful gift to remind her of the good times. Families have not been able to spend a lot of time together, or none at all, thus seeing everyone’s faces in one place will bring a smile to her face. You could even create a scrapbook instead of an album, decorating it with your own style and handwritten quotes or messages. There is no greater ‘thank you’ than showing someone you treasure the memories you have with them.
Flowers – Like the chocolates, flowers are a simple gift, they are kind of expected on Mother’s Day, aren’t they? Nevertheless, flowers and a card will be nice for your mum to wake up to. Find out what her favourite flowers are, even look at online florists and see if you can order any beautiful arrangements. Although, another fact to find out is whether your mum has Hay Fever or not.
Reasons why she’s the best – This is a slight D.I.Y project but totally worth it in the end. You are going to have to purchase a money box that is a simple jar with no decorations, this is so you can do it yourself. Then, get small pieces of paper and write a reason on each piece why you love your mum. Then fold the paper up and slot it into the money jar. If you buy a plain glass one, you can decorate the outside of it yourself to make it personal.
Homemade tea for two – Since tea rooms will be closed on Mother’s Day, why not create your own afternoon tea? Find your inner Paul Hollywood and bake some cakes, scones and make some finger sandwiches. It is another present which you can put a lot of effort into it and let your appreciation for your mum show. If not, there are plenty of packs of desserts that can be bought for £10.
Pyjamas – Nothing can beat a comfy pair of pyjamas! Yes, there are sets of these that will be under £10 but this is Mother’s Day, it is all about spoiling your mum. You could follow two paths with this present, you could either buy some goofy ones that have a humorous motif or picture on. The second option is a luxurious set, which you may think that surely there is not a pair out there but trust me there is.
Slippers – Similar to pyjamas, there are cheaper slippers out there but you want to show you prioritise her comfort, so you are going to have to spend some coins. When I think of a quality pair of slipper, I am thinking of thick soles for some nice support with some faux fur on the inside.
Makeup bag – These do not have a very long life span, it lasts for a year or two but then some makeup leaks in a corner or a powder breaks into tiny pieces at the bottom. There are some many shops out there that sell them, pretty much every single one will. Look at how much makeup your mum has to determine the size of the one you need to buy. If you buy one and still have a little more money to spend, buy little bits of makeup that you can hide inside.
Eyeshadow palette – We are going into Spring, so buy a palette that has pastels and light colours. With the theme of the Spring clean, your mum may be wanting to sort through her makeup and throw away any old stuff. Since lockdown has started, a lot of people have been experimenting with makeup and different styles. Plus, it would go nicely with the makeup bag!
Personalised blanket – I bought one of these for my mum and she loves it, the best blanket in our house! There are a variety of online shops that make printing photos onto blankets available. A blanket can be taken anywhere with your mum: on a long car journey, on holiday or to a family barbeque. It is definitely something she will want to show off! It is not just blankets that you can personalise but other soft furnishings too, like pillows.
Gift voucher – These make perfect presents as there are so many types of gift vouchers you can buy. You can purchase clothing company vouchers, ones for restaurants and online stores. There are also ideal as you can put different amounts of money on a card, so if you are struggling then you can just put £20-£30 on a card and pop it inside a nice card. You can also purchase vouchers for days out like a spa day because a lot of mums may need a relaxing day.
Alcohol – A gift you may have thought of already but if you are looking for a little something to polish off your gift haul, this may be the one. A single bottle of your mother’s favourite drink is an option or you could buy her a selection box of alcohol. For example, a collection of small bottles of gin or liqueurs. A bottle is a good gift for any other family members or close friends.
Spa night at home – Similar to the afternoon tea at home, you can make a hamper of beauty bits to create a spa night for your mum. Things like: bath bombs, face and foot masks, a face roller, a new beauty headband, nail polish and/or face oils. Spend some quality time with your mum and have a pamper night, involve yourself in the spa night so it shows your mum that you are interested in the things she does and want to spend time with her. If you do not want to buy the bits separately or do not know what to get, you can buy sets of beauty and spa products.
Dressing gown – It does not really matter whether they have one already as you can buy them one that is completely different to the one they already have. For example, if your mum has a thin linen or silk dressing gown, then buy her a thick woollen one.
Jewellery box – A jewellery box has a very special meaning as it is a place where valuable things are stored. It is a good present that any other bits of jewellery can accompany. You do not have to buy just a plan one either, like some other presents on this list, there are websites where you can get personalised boxes. For example, a leather box with your mother’s initials embroidered on it, or a photo printed into the fabric or displayed inside.
Constellation art – For Mother’s Day two years ago, I bought my Mum four maps of the constellations on the night my brothers and sister were born. They are now proudly displayed on a wall in our house. Mum’s love anything that resembles or reminds them of their children, especially something that represents the most special moment between the two of you; the moment you were born. So to have a map of the stars that looked down upon you both as the two of you first laid eyes on each other and bonded is very special.
Earrings – If your mum is a bit of a magpie, like mine, when it comes to jewellery then say no more. With earrings, size does not matter so if you were wanting to surprise your mum with the present, you do not have to trouble yourself with finding what size she needs. As long as you look at what type of earrings she wears, so do not go and buy her a pair of hoops if she only likes to wear studs. You do not have to go over the top and buy earrings that are hundreds of pounds, any jewellery store has reasonably priced earrings.
Personalised alcohol glass – What better present to accompany a bottle of alcohol than a personalised glass they can use? Gin glasses with people’s names on them or drinking quotes are very popular at the moment and if your mum is a big gin fan then there is no better present. It is not just gin glasses that are available: you can get cider glass, pint glasses, wine glasses and champagne flutes. Just find out what alcohol your mum prefers and then hop online.
A bag – Who is going to say no to a new bag? If she did not treat herself to one already then get looking. Maybe your mum wants to return to work with an amazingly fashionable new bag, or maybe she would like a new clutch for when pubs and restaurants are back open for a night out with the girls. What is even better is a bag with a matching purse, so they come as a set.
Perfume – Now perfume can be a difficult one and here is why, some people prefer a very specific scent which can only be found in some perfumes. This is where you will have to do your research. If you do not want to get her the same perfume she already has, there are websites where you can enter the perfume and it will tell you the ingredients. Then, as tedious as this may be, you can enter different types of perfumes you find online and see if they have the same or very similar ingredient as that will mean they will smell the same.
