Morning Coffee

Kate Whittle

  1. Wake up. Get up. The barest minimum of clothes to get to the kitchen – don’t scare the neighbours. Kettle on. Sit and wait with your head in your hands. Shaking. Pounding. Coffee and then back to bed.
  2. Planned. Organised. Nice jumper and jeans, handbag, keys. Meet at the Café at 10:00. A reassuring hug to reacquaint yourselves before sitting, catching up over steaming mugs. This is comfortable, cosy and casual. There’s always time for another.
  3. Up and out. Rushed. Did you remember your keys? A mask? Burn your mouth and feel the sudden buzz.
  4. Shall we? We consider. Ponder. Why not? Everyone deserves a break to relax, to talk. We sit on the steps and warm our hands around paper cups. Watching the world go by.
  5. Outside in the sun. Did you really want a hot drink?
