Monday Motivation

Lily O'Keeffe

Happy Monday! Sometimes Mondays are difficult when trying to get back in the swing of things, but it is the best day to get on track. So let’s make this the week count!

  • You, currently reading this.

Getting yourself motivated for the week ahead is essential, and it is all about finding the drive from within to act in a certain way, or complete tasks you want to do.

Motivating yourself is essentially just about finding the drive within yourself to act in a certain way, or complete the tasks that you wanted to do.

Getting motivated breaks down into three main components: Instigation, Persistence and Energy. With these three components, you can achieve anything.

Instigation is all about starting! Start to form that habit, start your day with a ritual like making your bed, or sign up to something that you’ve always wanted to do. Get over that first hurdle, and the next one won’t look so intimidating.

Persistence… do you want to make this week a success? Sustain that effort that you started and keeping pursuing it until your goals are achieved, even when it gets challenging. Pursue when you don’t think you have enough time, when you’re tired and when you’d rather be doing 100 other things, as those will be the times that spark change and show true persistence.

Energy is determined by how much intensity, time, effort and concentration you devote to you achieving your desired outcome. When you put in a lack of energy, you cannot expect to see anything worth mentioning at the end.

When trying to motivate yourself, you have to think about the small changes you are willing to make, that will impact the three components. For example, if you want to become more organised, instigate a plan for each day, persist with your rota until you have achieved what you set out to do, and invest enough energy into your new habits, so that by the evening, you’re ready for another great day tomorrow.

When you’re trying to have the best week yet, you have to consider what motivates you the most. True motivations will keep your drive high, even when times get tough. Are you motivated externally? Extrinsic motivations are all from external sources such as impressing others, money or prizes. Whereas intrinsic motivations come from within you, giving you a sense of personal gratification, or conducting your life that aligns with your values.

Go out there and make no excuses this week, be honest with yourself and reach those targets, no matter what stands in your way. I believe in you.
