Life’s A Roller Coaster

Amy Harris

Life’s a roller coaster,
a great Irishman once said
so I know you’re feeling down
but pop that in your head.

Flips and turns; ups and downs
Laughter and tears
the sun rises as much as it sets
there’ll be excitement, there’ll be fears.

sometimes the heart skips a beat
and others it races too fast
days when the mind buzzes
and days when it just feels flat.

things change, feelings pass
and sometimes new ones arrive,
as much as you feel empty today
tomorrow, i promise, you will feel more alive.

pain is the price we pay
for all the love we feel
so it’s better to feel the sadness now
to be sure when the happiness is real.

let your tears become rivers,
let your stomach turn to mush,
listen to your heart as it bleeds,
rest your head if it gets too much,

but make sure you laugh from your belly
on the days when it feels bright
and say ‘I love you’ to yourself
say it morning and night.

your sadness is real
but so is your ability to shine
and regardless of what you think,
Self care is just being kind.

you can’t always control your feelings
but they don’t define who you are
you can choose to be your own best friend
you can praise yourself for getting this far.

Treat yourself like someone you love
don’t you dare try and fight it
and remember:
life’s a rollercoaster, you just gotta ride it.
