How to write an essay last minute

Lily O'Keeffe

I hate to say it, but we all know that panic, whether you forgot you had a deadline, or simply have put it off until the last minute. These are a few tips from me to you, some may seem obvious, but stick to the plan, and hopefully, you’ll get that essay sent in, stress-free.

Write a detailed essay plan

The first thing you have to do, with any successful essay, is to write a plan, but it is particularly important when you’re short for time. Writing a detailed plan will help make the paragraphs fall into place, quickly and effectively, without missing any key points.

Factor in any time difficulties

Consider any issues you may face between now and deadline time. Have you got a shift at work, or maybe you need to factor in some rest? Keeping to a time schedule that poses with no surprises is perfect for a quick turn around with deadlines.

Don’t forget to do your research

Writing an entire essay without doing any research will be a waste of time. Google Scholar is great for finding quotes quickly, so make sure you find some information before starting.

Talk to your course mates

Let your course mates know your situation, and they might have some words of wisdom to help you out! Of course no cheating… but they may be able to help you out!

Remove any distractions

Put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb Mode’ and keep it away unless you need it. Playing music can be very beneficial but also a great excuse to change a song, which then ends up with you scrolling through your Instagram feed mindlessly. Try and keep distractions low, and maybe let the people you live with know that you’re trying to finish your essay, to avoid any unnecessary distractions.

Get some snacks

Eat whilst you work and make sure you keep hydrated and fuelled! You don’t want to burn out or lose motivation throughout so keep yourself going. This will help you in ways you may not even realise, so don’t underestimate it!

Submit it on time

Now this one seems obvious, but if your assignment allows you to send through different and updated versions of your essay, submit a few. This means you’ll always have something to fall back on in the scenario where something goes wrong. Submit your final essay at least half an hour before it is due, this will allow for any issues that you may not expect. Submitting late can often result in capped marking, which defeats the point of all your hard work!
