Dear Aspect, why am I feeling anxious about starting university all of a sudden?
Hope: It’s normal to feel anxious. Starting university is a big step towards your future as you are narrowing down on which doors you would like to open. Then, as soon as you get the hang of being at university, it’s like you’re being chucked into the real world. So yes, it is completely normal to feel stressed, worried or anxious, it is a whole new world you are about to enter. Just do not let any anxious thoughts or feelings dictate what you do within the next three or four years.
Leana: Regardless of whether you’re first year or a post-grad student, uni is difficult and ever changing. It’s also now a billion times more unpredictable due to living throughout the pandemic last year. Don’t feel bad about having anxiety about uni as many will be joining you on that journey! Reach out to people and try as much as you can to just enjoy the experience!
Hey Aspect, how do I overcome my anxiety?
Hope: There are many ways to do this, not every single ‘remedy’ will work. Try reading up on your course as much as you can, the more you know then the better you will feel going into your first lessons. You can even reach out to previous or current students of that course and get their take on it. Do the same with anything else that you have anxious thoughts about, it could be the university itself, the area you are moving to or your student accommodation. What works for me, personally, is getting ahead with my work. I like to read up on what work I have to do, look if there is anything I can begin planning or working on and make notes on the set readings. For me, the anxiety comes from my thoughts of being behind in work and not doing enough, so I like to be prepared.
Leana: Try to narrow down the biggest cause of your anxiety – This will help you get a better indication of how to go about things. I think the biggest thing of all would be to remember that you have worked incredibly hard to get to where you are, you deserve this position in life and you are destined for greatness, regardless of the times when you don’t feel it. I have every faith in you.
Is it weird that I do not feel stressed or anxious about university?
Hope: Not at all! Everyone reacts differently to new things in their lives. Just because it’s a new chapter and part of the unknown does not mean you should fear it. Brace the change as much as you can, you may become stressed during your years at university but they really are the best years of your life. You are going to make new friends, you are going to learn so much more about your chosen career path and there is no better place to discover valuable life lessons than university.
Leana: Everyone is different and that’s what makes the world so special. Confidence from one individual may encourage another to feel the same way. Equally, pre-uni, you may feel relaxed and then upon arrival, it could be a different story. Never feel down-trodden about your feelings towards this journey, it’s a big change in life!
