Dear Aspect, since the pandemic began, how many new species have there been?

2020 was an extremely difficult time that saw a large amount of suffering around the world, however in regards to biodiversity, the world of science boomed. The exact number for 2020/21 is not known but scientists at the National History Museum discovered a whopping 503 new species. These numbers are phenomenal and can be largely celebrated through the continued adherance to the Covid-19 regulations.

Aspect…has the climate improved over the past year?

To put it simply, no. During the first lockdown in 2020, the global changes and effects were seen and a number of positives could be seen. For example, air pollution and global temperatures were reduced, however, this was short-lived. With restrictions lifting, holidays resuming and more cars on the road, the natural effect resumed. It is suggested that the Covid-19 pandemic has a small effect but it was too short-lived to make a lasting difference. To make a real change, people around the world need to make a combined effort to reduce these effects.

How can I be more environmentally friendly?

The main thing that you can do to help the environment is to be aware. Acknowledging climate change and your effects is the first step to making a difference, speak up. There are plenty of small steps that you can take to make your mark on this issue. We recently released an article about how the smallest changes can make the biggest difference when we all work together.
