Dear Aspect, I feel so detached from my coursemates and I am scared I’ll lose touch with them due to virtual learning. Any advice?
I’m sure most final year students feel the same as it definitely wasn’t the graduating year everyone expected. We would say, make a group chat with your course, even if it is just for light conversations about classes or modules. With closer friends, stay in touch and reminisce on the memories you have shared. By doing this, you can plan for the future when things are safe! I know Zoom calls are getting old now but you can even have a virtual night out together from your homes!
Aspect… How can I make my study space an area where I feel focused and motivated?
We suggest you determine what revision techniques work for you first of all. This will help work out what motivates you and where your distractions are. Motivational quotes or writing down your short term goals is a great way to keep focused, so maybe invest in a pinboard to keep you on track. Keeping this area free from distractions is vital, so if you’re distracted by your phone, leave it in the kitchen or in your wardrobe- anywhere where you cannot see or hear it. Make the space comfortable, that could mean investing in a nice office chair, it’ll be worth it. If you know you get restless when studying, invest in fidget toys, a wiggle seat, or a timer so you know when your revision breaks and sessions start and end. Most importantly, keep this area clean. There is nothing more distracting than an untidy workspace.
Hi Aspect… I am in my final year and I am worried that I’ll never be able to return to University. How can I make this year special despite not having the usual send off?
This is such a sad one as no one knew last March the enormity of what we were about to enter. A lot of organisations are offering online experiences such as city tours or gigs. Make the most of these opportunities even if Zoom calls are feeling boring. In terms of graduation, make a plan for a celebration, even if the ceremonies are all cancelled. See if you can still hire the gown and buy a cake and some flowers! You deserve it! Something I’d do is get some nice photos around your University city or campus. Get your housemates to go to some of the nicest spots around the uni, and have a photoshoot. It’ll be cool to look back on one day. Although it may feel like a huge deal now, remember all the amazing things you have ahead of you. This is just the start of your journey and you have a degree! So celebrate that even if the graduation ceremonies are called off. You are doing great!
